2022 Season Preview

Uncategorised

With the England men’s team in disarray following a shambolic winter, and the England women’s team pipped to the post (read comprehensively beaten) by an all-conquering Australia team, it is up to Clapham Inn to fly the flag for English* cricket.

That’s not to say that there aren’t changes for this season, Matt ‘Dad’ Goodman returns as captain but is supported by some new faces in the Clapham In boardroom. James Frecknall takes over as the club President, fresh from his record breaking exploits last season where he became Clapham In’s all time leading wicket taker. One can only hope that the nicest man in cricket shall reign benevolently. We also have our very own qualified coach after Steve Smith passed his ECB Level 2 qualification, and also takes on the role of Vice Captain. And Jim Clack, never far from power trades President for Treasurer. Thank you to Jon Stern who hands back the roles Vice Captain and Treasurer.

Away from the boardroom indoor nets have now concluded, with enthusiasm initially filling in for accuracy. But under the watchful eye of Coach Smith, lines and length have slowly been re-discovered and bats and front pads reacquainted with each other. It was also good to see some new faces over the winter and we look forward to the new recruits joining us in the field this season.

The season begins properly with the second Tour of Leckford, following the unprecedented success of the inaugural one last September, during which we learnt that the usually relaxed Clapham Inners, develop a ruthless competitive streak when up against their teammates / friends. This year we hope to see more gladiatorial battles between Gregory and Shinner (akin to Donald v Atherton but with more Pinot Noir consumed by both combatants) and Goodman versus…well everyone really because no one else was in a fit state to bowl (what can I say, the negronis were very very good).

This is followed by a full season of fixtures – thank you Hedge for all your hard work organising these – including some new opponents (welcome Highgate, Stoke Newington and Suffolk Sunrisers) and some old friends. We also have our usual three T20 Friday night games in Regents Park. It is also a milestone year for the club who turn 25 this year. Watch this space for details on events to mark this significant milestone.

As ever you can find our Fixtures list here. If you’re free do come down to cheer us on and raise a glass or two with us.

There, I did it, an entire pre-season article without a single mention of Covid.

*I know we’re not all English, but that really messes with the analogy!
